June 14, 2010 - KING CITY ACCEPTING CITY COUNCIL APPLICATIONS FOR THE NOVEMBER 2, 2010 ELECTION

The filing period to apply for candidacy for City Councilor is now open and will remain open until City Hall close of business, Tuesday, August 24th at 5 p.m. Candidate application packets are available at the City Hall, 15300 SW 116th Avenue. There are four openings for the January 2011 to January 2015 term.

Councilors whose terms will be expiring at the end of this year are recently appointed interim Councilor Sam Locklin, and Councilors Ron Shay, Jim Gates and Ken Gibson. The mayor for the 2011-2013 Council term will be appointed at the first meeting in January 2011.

The City Council meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month in King City's City Hall, 15300 SW 116th Avenue, at 7 p.m. All regular meetings are open to the public. Copies of the Agenda are posted on the City's bulletin board, and on the bulletin board in the Plaza, or can be picked up at City Hall.

The Mayor and City Councilors all serve the citizens of our community in a volunteer capacity.

The City Charter provides for a Council/Manager form of city government. The City Council has seven members who are elected at large by City voters. Members serve four-year terms. The council elects the Mayor and a Council President to serve in the absence of the Mayor. The Council appoints a professional City Manager, who performs executive duties for the City, applying the policies made by the Council. The City Manager oversees the City Departments, expends funds as authorized, makes recommendations to the Council, and keeps them up to date on the City's business and financial condition.

The Council is the policy-making body of the city. They adopt laws and regulations, annual goals and objectives and budgets that fund a wide range of public services. Council members give direction to city staff through the City Manager who serves at the pleasure of the city council. The mayor is the leader of the governing body and presides over the council meetings.
