Many of King City's streets and sidewalks were built in the 1960s, and are over 50 years old.The City receives around $250,000 a year from the state for street repairs but has a street project backlog of over $1,500,000.
The gap between our need for repairs and annual dollars received is growing every year. Lately, we have been getting many calls from concerned citizens requesting us to do more street maintenance. The number of calls is growing. We want to do more projects, but the money from the state is limited. We also know that many members of the community are on fixed incomes. We know we need to be fair to all
members of our community.
Two options that have worked in other cities are a vehicle registration fee or a gas tax. The vehicle registration fee would only be paid by King City residents. It would be the same for all cars, no matter what the cars were worth or how much people drive. A gas tax would be paid by everyone that buys gas in King City, no matter where they live. It would be paid on a per-gallon basis, so the impact of the tax would depend on how much people drove.
